Porta Palio

This gateway, as other in the city, was disegned by Michele Sanmicheli, in order to celebrate the importance of the ancient Via Postumia.

Its name is derived from a horse-race (“palio”) held there to inaugurate the gateway, which, for most of the time, remained closed. It is for this reason that the Veronese of the time nicknamed it “Porta Stupa” or “Closed gateway”.

You can see it only from outside.

Address: Stradone Porta Palio, 37121 Verona.
