The Cimbri

The Veronese Mountain zone is the homeland of an entire ethnic group of people (the Cimbri) who have kept their language customs and traditions.

There are many hypothesis about their origins: the main one says that they are people coming from the limit zone between Tirolo, Svevia and Baviera. The "Cimbri" settled here to exploit woods, authorized by the Roverè Veronese Municipality to help local people to deforest.

Their name should derive from an old german alteration of "Zimberer", which means carpenter. The typical dialect of Cimbri, deriving from the old german, still survives nowadays in the Giazza village, where names of streets are in both languages, to enhance traditions, gastronomy and dialect.
