Scaligeri Castle of Villafranca

Even the castle of Villafranca was part of the serraglio and dates back to the year 1201.

It was erected as an outpost to protect a particularly vulnerable spot on the border with Mantova.

In 1243 Ezzelino da Romano added a tower and a moat which stretched right up to Sommacampagna. After numerous vicissitudes and with the invention of fire-arms, the castle lost its strategic importance and was abandoned.

Today many events took place in the castle. Visit the section “Events”. It’s possible to visit the Comune of Villafranca website (www.comune.villafranca.vr.it) to discover the calendar of events hosted in the castle.
