Scaligeri Castle of Villafranca

Even the castle of Villafranca was part of the serraglio and dates back to the year 1201.

It was erected as an outpost to protect a particularly vulnerable spot on the border with Mantova.

In 1243 Ezzelino da Romano added a tower and a moat which stretched right up to Sommacampagna. After numerous vicissitudes and with the invention of fire-arms, the castle lost its strategic importance and was abandoned.

Today many events took place in the castle. Visit the section “Events”. It’s possible to visit the Comune of Villafranca website ( to discover the calendar of events hosted in the castle.
