In the world of advertising "testimonials" are those famous people who advertise and promote a particolar product. Well, malcesine can boast a famous "testimonial": none other than Johann Wolfgang Goëthe who realised Malcesine's irresistible appeal way back in 1786.

Since then the hospitality of Malcesine and peaceful lakeside hamlets of Cassone and Navene, has taken a giant leap forward, and this area has become one of Italy's most famous resorts. Hundreds of hotels, tens of camping-sites and various residences welcome the tourist today. In Summer, thousands of tourists wander through the twisting medieval streets, go up to the scaligeri castle, lounge on its sunny beaches or walk along the shore-line, bordered by shops, restaurants and ice-cream parlours. Sail-boats and wind-surfers dot the clear-blue surface of the lake.

Malcesine is a fascinating and curios blend of contrasts. Its lush gardens, oleanders and olive-groves (which produce a very delicately flavoured olive-oil) give it a Mediterranean quality, whilst only a few kilometres away, further up its mountains, it becomes alpine in character. Moving on, in a few minutes, from the olive-groves, to the peaks of Monte Baldo, is an unforgettable experience, rendered even more memorable by the Malcesine-tratto spino cable-car. This means of transport can be used by those who prefer going back down, into the valley, on foot or by mountain-bike. Monte Baldo is also a haven for skiers. It has excellent skiing facilities, and skiers can enjoy themselves whilst feasting their eyes on the ever-present clear-blue lake.

Malcesine is a sailers' and windsurfers' paradise: clubs and schools organise courses for beginners and also more experienced. Mountain-biking and parachuting are also practised here as well as hiking up to Monte Baldo and skiing at Tratto spino.

Cultural Events

  • The open-air theatre at the foot of Malcesine's castle hosts prestigious performances throughout the summer.
  • In august, Cassone hosts the "Cyclamen Festival" with its traditional "Bisse" (typical boats used on the lake) races.
  • September hosts "Ciottolando con gusto" and one can witness the "Sensora" in April.

An absolute must is the "Palace of the Captains" built by the Venetians near Malcesine's Port and Girolamo Dai Libri's splendid "Deposition" in the parish church.

The parish church of Cassone features in one of Klimt's paintings and the Aril (175m in leght) is considered the shortest river in the world.

The Castle

The Castle Malcesine's Castle was probably founded by the longobards. Rebuilt by the Scaligeri and altered by Venetian and Austrian military engineers, the castle now houses a museum dedicated to the lake's history and natural environment.
The view from its tower is splendid.
